The choice is yours. You could pick out the larger ones by hand and leave the rest to grow. You could setup a snail trap or a chunk of cucumber at lights off and remove in the morning (with snails attached) You could buy an assasin snail but they will eat ANY snails you have, including nerites, appl...

Yes they can be left in until they decompose
Check hardness and ph as they do lower it slightly, the effects might be greater in softer water though!

ah yes oxford is pretty hard water. Very slow acclimatising when you get there as the hardness will be a shock. Be prepared to loose a few as well. The swordtails will love it though!

easiest plant you'll get, just be careful they don't receive too much light as algae can take over :)

Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
PH and hardness are also worth knowing.
