Swapping Fluval 306 for 406 on Roma 240

Post by Netsu » Tue Nov 19, 2019 21:59 pm

As title says! Anyone with a Fluval Roma 240 successfully swapped the external 306 filter (which comes with the tank) for a 406?

Do the pipes all match? Would I have to drain tank to swap over? Does it fit in cabinet?

There doesn’t seem to be any definitive answers anywhere!

Yes I did exactly this :)

It's a 100% straight swap and all pipework fits.

No need to drain the tank. Just turn off the filter, raise the Aquastop valve, then the red valve to release pipes and swap over. Make sure you put as much of the old media in the new filter as possible (the stuff in the baskets will fit, the large sponge screens won't but that's OK). There will be an extra basket in the 406 so just chuck in more media of your choice.

It does fit in the cabinet.

Hope this helps! Any other questions just ask.

Pics attached, excuse the mess...

Thank you so much! :D

Really worried it’d be a lot of work but if it’s just switching the actual canister that’ll be a doddle!

Hopefully there’ll be some decent Black Friday sales on the 406.

Yep it took me 10 mins and that included a filter clean ;)

I actually got mine from Pets at Home, got 20% off for signing up to their points card (which is otherwise rubbish) and found another voucher for 10% off which they let me use on top. Very bargainous and I find they are good if anything goes wrong (nothing has). I kept the 306 for spares as the impeller, impeller shaft, O-ring and other random breakable bits are the same on both models.

The Fluval 306 and 406 are totally compatible, the 406 has an extra media tray.
Just remove the aquastop from the 306, put the existing media trays in the 406, put some additional biological media in the additional tray, attach the aqua-stop to the 406 and away you go. :)

All the best

I did exactly the same thing, swapped the 306 for a 406, then later drilled two holes in the tank lid and fitted the 306 in the left hand side of the cabinet using the 406 hoses.

That makes me feel better for the time I tried to fill the tank for the first time before connecting the filter pipes up... and the time I opened the filter lid without putting up the Aquastop valve... :banghead:
