Bare bottom (dying to think of something cheeky to say! :D ...maybe not) aquariums are OK especially if you want to keep the set-up clinical. I've only done it with a reef aquarium once and always with a quarantine tank.

You do need to make extra sure the glass is clean if there's no substrate cover at all as it gets quite "mulmy", but otherwise it's fine.

Some fish really need a substrate to exhibit normal behaviours, so depends on what you want to put in there?
