Eurgg that is creepy up close, but also fascinating!!
I had/ have the black brush algae on my wood, and a bit on the edges of old leaves. But it was more a looser, longer filament type on plants -? Staghorn - mainly on my alternanthera reineckii pink, which I got rid of as a result though I really like the plant. It was definitely worse in high light areas on slower growing plants so reducing the light must have helped.

Hatchets are very endearing. I had a squadron of about a dozen in an approximatope (I'm stealing that!) which had linear flow. I love that description of the hatchets 
Mine are chasing each other around the very top of the tank, flapping their tiny little "wings".

It's the Fluval 406 (I upgraded from the 306 it came with). Yeah I like my big water changes. Lots of plants and pressurised CO2.

Thanks PJN! Most of the new fish are from Abyss. They have really good prices these days - tetras and hatchets were 5 for £10. Shop was absolutely packed.
