how hard is it to breed dwarf ottos?

bought somedwarf ottos a couple of months ago from maiden head, unfortunatly i lost one so was left with three. the other day the wife spotted 5 on the glass. the guy at MH said they were difficult to breed. couldone have been gravid when i got them?

If there is a lot of algae in the tank and the water isn't too hard, and there's nothing to eat the eggs....you can get lucky.
I've had the odd fry pop up a couple of times.
They aren't easy to raise on purpose though. ;)

the tank only has gold tetra and silver tip tetra, arount 15 in all. woop free fish. and i dont clean the back or the side of the tank, so nice algae

Are you sure you have males and females?

They are very hard to sex.
I only found out when I noticed the female was very rotund, but that was after I'd spotted small versions skitting about.

Congratulations! Unintended spawnings are great fun.

I have seen otos spawn in a previous set-up; a bit like corys do - the female being chased around by all the males. She would lay one egg at a time (different to corys who like to release a small batch of eggs at a time) onto leaves and wood. I did have lots of tetras at the time, so no baby otos.

well i have seen them with my own eyes, and i can confirm i have at least three babies.

They are great, mine didn't survive that long, probably because I didn't realise I had any, so didn't do anything special like extra water changes while they were developing........
