I'm fairly sure it was an egg... I have extra fry now!

I lost the original couple of fry - either didnt feed them soon enough or the cloudy lettuce water was too polluting. The tetramin baby has kept the current 4 alive so far. Still tiny, but the tetramin is gone after an hour or so, I'm feeding them 2-3 times a day with tweezers to pick out as few grains as possible... hope they start to grow a noticeable amount soon!

Last update of the morning and possibly for this thread - the male died this week, gradually losing the ability to swim
The female is still looking perky although lonely
The fry are doing well, I can count 4 and they're slowly growing

I may move the females and let the fry have the whole tank to grow out - would that speed up their maturing?

Sorry for your loss :(
I know with some fish fry release hormones to help prevent their siblings growing, but generally having more room helps as well as more frequent smaller water changes.
To the tune of “the saints go marching in”:
Oh fluffy sheep! Oh fluffy sheep! Oh fluffy sheep are wonderful, they’re white Welsh and fluffy! Oh fluffy sheep are wonderful!

Quick update

Mum is doing well in the Rio 125, though on her own so I'm thinking about trying again with a fresh batch of rainbows
After letting the fry into the main tank and a water change, for some reason I only have 2 left.
They're very tiny still, maybe a little over 5mm

Should I be doing more frequent water changes and perhaps dilute any hormones as @Gingerlove05 suggested might be going on to speed up growth or are they naturally this slow to develop?

More water changes may help, just do small daily ones.
I would have left them until they were a lot bigger myself, they still look like tasty morsels.....

They're on their own in there now as I moved mum back into the 125 tank before releasing these into the qtank

I'll keep doing changes, it's a tiny tank so i'm using a takeaway tub to scoop water and inspect in case I scoop a baby, before ditching it. I'll to about 3L a day,
Want them to hurry up and grow so I can move on to cherry barb project!
