Going away for 3-6 months

Post by Scorps1212 »

So an opportunity has come up at work for a 3-6 month period working in New Jersey, USA.

My tank has been running for 1 month so is no way near fully grown out. I only have amano and ottos in there at the moment. Am dosing 25ml per day of Ei. Lights are on for 8 hours and C02 is on for 10 hours. And I'm doing at least a 50% WC weekly.

If I get accepted I was going to rip it all out and start again when I'm back. But a mate of mine said about leaving it running while I'm away. Thing is the misses wont do a WC on the tank but she will be ok with topping up the water when it gets too low. I can get auto dosing pumps for the ferts and the misses can wipe the glass down every day easily enough with the magnetic cleaner.

If I was to keep the tank running while I'm away, what times do you think I should reduce the lighting and C02 down to, seeing there will be no regular WCs getting done? My mate did say he'd do a WC on the tank for us but I'd say that'll be maybe once a month

No ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I will only have what I have to hand and that will be a submersible pump with enough hose to get to and from the sink and that's it ๐Ÿ˜•

As long as you can keep the waterchanges and dosing going there shouldn't be any reason why your aquascape cannot keep going. However, there will be issues upon your return, overgrowth and algae!

In 2018 George Farmer did a video on returning after a period away, what to expect and tips on how to bring the scape back.

Can the missus not change a 2l jug of water every couple of days or so, rather than do big water changes? ;)

Thanks bud, I'll watch that video a little later. As for the overgrowth on my return, my mate has said he can pop over to cut the plants back if I need him too. So that should be under control while I'm away.

Erm..... yeah she'd easily be able to fo that. You reckon a couple of litres every 2 or 3 days will be enough then? Even though she'll be taking water out from the top of the tank and not the bottom?

That's a really lovely tank, it would be a real shame to break it down and have to start over.

Yes, the filter should do the rest. All you need to do is replenish trace and just keep on top of any hormones or nitrate.
As long as she doesn't just pour it in as the shrimp could get upset.

Ok cool. And do you mean as long as she doesnt pour all the fresh water in at once? Kind of trickle it in yeah? I usually use a colander on WC so she can use that too.

What will you be doing in the land of silly hair cuts for a 3-6 month period?
