Using well water

Post by Peter88 »

I currently use tap water and because of this I have high phosphate and nitrate and where I work is a well that feeds a pond and has zero phosphate and low nitrate. My question is could I use the well water in my tank a 240 litre and if so would I have to change the water gradually over weeks.

What is the difference in ph and hardness?
Any change you make to the water would need to be gradual, probably over nearer to 3 months, but.....
What fish do you have and would they appreciate the different water anyway? ;)

Thanks for your comments plankton, the ph is slightly lower at 6.8 and the hardness is lower too being gh 14 and kh 8, which I believe would better suit the south American cichlids, tetras and silver dollars

So change slowly (over 3 months or so) so the fish can reacclimatise. They will likely appreciate the lower hardness. :)
A question though - will you still be able to get this well water during the current situation? If not, I wouldn't bother yet. ;)
