Fishless cycle ... with snails!!! 🐌🐌🐌

Post by Redpanda »

Hi All,

I have finally started my new tank, and 7 days in I can see very little change in ammonia. Started with starter bacteria for 3 days, then added fish flakes, they are rotting away but nothing is changing... worried I’m doing something wrong 🙈

Anyway, today I noticed few tiny little snails in there, around 2mm size. They must have come with plants I bought from fish shop ..

Will they affect fish tank cycle? Will they multiply and how quickly? Do I get rid of them now or wait when I get fish? And finally how do I keep them under control and/or get rid of them?

Any advice would be really appreciated 😊 thank you

Bladder snails :)
They can be a pest and multiply like mad if theres enough food around. If you dont want them just take them out, or set a trap for them with a lettuce leaf or fresh veg weighed down, then just take them off that :)

Use liquid ammonia rather than fish flakes, it's more controllable.

Not sure but it may even kill the snails off

Is it bad that I had a little joy inside me to see some creatures in my tank, I’ve longed for it so much and now finally got something to watch 😊
I am tempted to keep these and then pick them as they grow , but worried it will get out of control.
Or maybe will be more cruel to get rid of them when they grow?
Ohhh..
Thanks

Pop them out side for the birds if you get too many.
They will be eating the fish flakes, so it's probably better to use ammonia.
They usually survive ammonia cycles as well......
