Hi.
Looks like I'm going to be moving back up to London for work.
I see the area where I could be living has a nitrate level of 32 and a DGH of 14.
I am still planning a future setup and wonder if the nitrate level is too high? This would be a fairly heavily planted tank.
Phosphate level is not given by the waterboard. I don't really want to go down the RO water route. Suppose I could fill very large bucket up and extract some of the nitrates before refilling the tank??
Thinking of getting a 240litre Fluval Roma with a 406 Fluval cannister filter. I know this aquarium setup will come to fruition one day.
Any thoughts would be very welcome,
Cheers, Dominic

The nitrate level shouldn’t be a problem unless your keeping sensitive fish eg electric blue rams.
Depending on your stocking the hardness may be an issue if its very different from your current hardness.

The nitrates come out of my tap at 50ppm. It's down to 10 24 hrs after a water change in stans tank which is 60 litres and I have 14 plants, some water lettuce and a poor attempt at a carpet.

The levels should be fine, add a few plants and they (nitrates) should lower over time.

I have battled with nitrates as long as I can remember (about 40ppm out of the tap), all with limited success. Even plants did not do much for me (though I keep goldfish, they produce a lot of waste). I have spoken to Seachem and there are differences in their nitrate removing producs - some are only suitable for low flow rates, some products work by breaking down organic waste, which means you need to lower your tap nitrates first. Some people use Pothos - it's a plants that grows out of water (submerge the roots into the tank). I have a tiny one, so can't comment on it yet...
One thing that solved my nitrates was installing Pozzani filter. It takes the nitrates out of your tap water before you put it into tank. However, water changes take ages because the water trickles out of the filter. Also cartridges don't last long (I now buy nitrate resin in bulk as opposed to cartridges). A bit of a pain, but it solved the nitrate issue

Mine just hang with their roots in the water now they are big enough, but I used to use a sucker to keep them in place when they were small. You can get both pothos and peace lilies at any decent garden centre – they are extremely common. As for levels: my water comes out of the tap at 30-40 but my tank is rarely above 20. I learnt about pothos through @kieran, he’s the man to talk to.
It’s probably also worth saying my tank is heavily planted so the pothos can’t take all the credit, but was the first plant I ever put in a tank and I’ve never had any problems with nitrates. Hope it helps!
