My male Nyererei was hiding under the rocks, gulping a lot (did doubt he was she and holding but isn't). He then spat out something very yellow and slimy looking, proceeded to swim around head first into things, then sort of went upright and was dead by morning. Checked water levels obviously and everything fine. No other issues with any fish, this all happened within 24 hours. No marks or signs of stress, bullying, parasites.

Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about the cichlid.
Did you by any chance manage to get the yellow thing out for inspection? That sounds very parasitic and would point to treating the whole tank for them....
