Does anyone have any experience of the tall octagonal tanks?

I might well be wrong but I've never been a fan as in my mind fish are better off with longer thanks rather than tall tanks?

As long as you don't keep any fish in them, they can make a nice light feature with bubbles and coloured lights :)
