If its cichlids you are considering the golden eye dwarf cichlid is a perfect starter for a beginner you should look them up, they are very peaceful this is what I started with these are mine male and female.

Blue rams are more aggressive than Bolivians.
Angels can't be trusted, even if they're peaceful at first.
Dwarf cichlids like Stevies above and checkerboard are pretty docile.

I think will start with Corys
Then Need to decide on 1 larger school of fish, maybe tetras or Rasbora.
Then will look at dwarf cichlids how exciting!
Fingers crossed the shops reopen soon

Yes not so sure about that, I could try I suppose, but you don’t know what you going to get. Not that I’m an expert In the first place..
I might try calling local shop and see whether they are providing any services at all.

Found a pic of my chequerboard cichlid - male, the female is not so brightly coloured, not the best pic but he was truly a stunning fish, sadly I lost the female after about 8 months and during this time I had become more aware of the effect of water hardness on fish, since they really need softer water I decided not to get any more and rehomed the male, wish I had a better pic but this was some time ago, still it might give you some idea here he is
