'Unipac sand seems to be the best readily available sand.'

If you're thinking of sand, rather than gravel, DO NOT USE PLAYSAND!
Don't be a cheapskate like me and regret it (also like me) - buy the decent Unipac stuff.

I haven't used online shops for sand.
Here's the Unipac site......

If you're getting/have corys or loaches, get smaller grains, and don't get coral, that will shred barbels and gills.

Is that so? I know I had this a few days ago when I posted something and then it was not there. Thought maybe I had not logged in properly or got chucked out or perhaps posted on the wrong thread. Reassuring to see it happens occasionally to others, too. Will keep an eye out then :)

Proshrimp sell all the Unipac range, plus a few other substrate products, and I've always received decent service from them :)

Hmm I'll have a look into that! shouldn't be happening now.

Don't forget the coral sand willl buffer the water and raise the hardness! not a good thing unless you're keeping malawi's!

HANLOU, in another thread, raised an interesting point when mentioning that ammonia be continually added to a cycling tank. I didn’t do this, merely adding enough amount to start it and leaving the decaying food in the bottom to add the necessary ammonia during the cycle. Maybe this is why the cycle took 7 – 8 weeks. I need to commence cycling my 40 gallon (being repaired) and wonder if regular additions of ammonia would speed up the process.
