We were immensely grateful to KevB for accepting our invitation to participate as a Guest Star rider for Game 8.  He now has more pressing engagements and we wish him well.

PJN's towel is now dry and has come offline.

The Entertainment Committee has granted chris.tinker a point for allowing his username to provide amusement stop.

In an incident that caused some personal trauma, an extra point has been awarded to four riders. Details under 'Scoring' below.

Results for Game 9

The aim of the Game was to try to keep the bucket's pH as close as possible to 5 and to see what would happen to nitrite oxidation.  The pH bit was far more difficult than I envisaged due to some mysterious buffering that was going on. At first I thought it must have been due to the smidgeon of potassium bicarbonate I'd put in some time ago - but on checking back, that seems to have been exhausted before the Game began.  I'll look more closely at my notes and see if I can come up with anything to explain it.  Tests I did in a separate bucket didn't throw any light on it - I'll report briefly on those in a later post. In the end I managed to keep the pH suppressed to a reasonable level during the run.

I bludgeoned my graph-making software into producing something - much better than my previous hand-drawn effort. In order to examine it closely you might have to save it and zoom with whatever photo editing program you use. So here's what happened :

Game Points

I'd previously announced that there would be no points at stake for responding to my ad hoc 'four-asterisk' challenge. When I was called in urgently to see the Chairman of the Race Organising Committee in his study, I knew something was amiss. I had the foresight to stuff a wad of blotting paper down my trousers but my visit was still not an ideal experience.

Accordingly I must report that have been 'asked' to gift an asterisk point each to : Gingerlove05 ; Stephen ; Cheltgirl ; and Plankton.

Gingerlove05, Cheltgirl, Redders, and Rallymatt all hit a five-pointer.  PJN had the only three-point answer. There were lots of 'ones' but, happily, no-one scored zilch.

The Table After Game 9

Gingerlove05                25.0 [and a halo]
RallyMatt                      20.0
Cheltgirl                       18.5 [plus halo and fig leaf]
Mito                             17.5 [plus halo and Sprocket]
Plankton                       16.5
Annie                           16.0
Sarah                           15.5
Stephen                        13.5
PJN                              12.5
chris.tinker                    12.5
fr499y                           11.0 [plus halo]
Redders                          8.5

Onwards. Everyone's stamina is quite impressive!
