Root tabs are very useful for grass's , your gravel looks fine for it, most grass's require Co2 for best growth, most important is your light, you probably need to have either a very decent LED for optimal growth or I would go with at least 2 T5 floro lights.

Get well soon mate, some tips for you is to maybe feed less, you can get away with just a small pinch every other day or two, less contaminants in the water then. If you can manage just a jug then I would do that each day if possible. As drifty says dont worry about the gravel cleaning.
