Using carbon in external filter
#1
I have never really thought about this properly until now. I run my filters without any carbon in them, just using it to clear any meds I have used then removing it again. Is this how it should be done, or should you leave it in and remove it if you need to medicate? I am thinking that if my recent heavy fish losses have anything to do with a contaminant, I may have avoided it if carbon had been present in my filter. Also, which is the most effective- the carbon sponges or the granular stuff in a mesh bag?
Thanks,
Liz

I took my carbon sponges out years ago, because as you say they’re only really good for removing tannins and meds and only last about 6 weeks. Other than that i dont think they do much else Undecided

I tend to use it for a few weeks if I put anything new in the tank ( decor wise ) just in case, but I don't run it normally. No point Big Grin

OK, thanks. I think I'll put some in now for a couple of weeks because of what has happened in my tank but obvs no point in keeping it in permanently.

'good for removing tannins and meds'

Woah! So am I wasting my time (& money) having an Almond leaf in the tank if I've got carbon foam in my little secondary filter?

Yes Baddams, I believe it will neutralise it. I may be wrong though as I'm no expert, but someone who knows more will surely be along soon. I do know that the carbon doesn't really have any benefits unless there is something that needs removing.

Thanks Liz.
Bugger, I assumed it was just doing a little water polishing (the small filter's mainly in there to improve the circulation).
I'm doing a water change tomorrow, so I'll swap it out for some plain stuff).
Having said that, it's been in there a couple of months, so the carbon's probably 'dead' by now.

It's highly likely that the carbon will be negating some (but not all) of the benefits afforded by Catappa leaves.

Yes, it will probably be quite ineffective by now. I just googled this too, but got mixed results. One said yes, it would remove the benefits, one described it as like "running the air-con with doors and windows wide open" and one said it didn't remove all benefits. However, since the carbon isn't actively required at present for any toxins or meds you may as well give the lovely almond leaves free reign without any carbon lurking in the shadows waiting to pounce!
