Hi, I have a 20gall tank with 1 dwarf male gourami, 5 cardinals, 3 cory's (?) I would like to keep fancy guppies but I don’t want the tank over run with fry, will the D/G along with the natural instinct of the guppies to eat their fry prevent this Confused

Regards Bob

Can you not get an all male group of guppies?.
Juwel Vision 180
5 corys
6 guppys
2 honey gouramis (barry and paul)
4 neons
3 black tetras
3 mollys (dobby, DC, buckbeak)
6 penguin tetras
Fluval 125
3 Angel fish

The dwarf will likely attack and kill the guppies (depends on his temperament).
My question would be whats your water hardness? As guppies prefer/beed harder water whereas your current stock is all soft water fish. This can normally be looked up on your water supplier website.

Hi thanks for your replies, DOH!!! I never even thought of all male guppies Cry

Regards the D/G he did have a mate but she died, and I think he does miss her, whilst he is not actively aggressive he does scoff all the food and guards the feeding area, I do not want to put him to sleep but I don’t know anybody to offer him to.

My water is soft, but according to some,  guppies have been that extensively bred that they can adapt to different water parameters ???? I honestly don’t know if this or true or not, perhaps some members have experience of this, Huh

Regards Bob

Unfortunately thats a myth, it takes thousands of years of evolution to adjust in such a way. Granted guppies can take softer water than the other livebearers but their minimum would be around 7.5-8dgh (german hardness) any softer and they would really struggle with osmoregulation issues (water/salt/mineral balance)
If there’s nothing wrong with him dont put the DG to sleep. You could find him another mate or increase your cory numbers as they prefer bigger groups and act more naturally (or mentally).
