Fish less cycling
#1
Tank now has substrate, rocks, a couple of pieces of bog wood (one on the bottom and one still floating  Sad ) plants, heater and filter, and of course conditioned water.
I think I’m ready to begin my fish less cycle. I have Bio boost and fish food.
I guess I ‘feed’ the tank daily, but how much, and when do I begin to test?
Thanks  Smile

It will be much easier to cycle if you get some ammonia. It’s cheap and available in b&q or Homebase or in some hardware stores.

Using food means you will be guessing how much to put in and will be hard to control levels.

Are you able to get some ammonia?

Check out Guides and Resources link at top right, there’s the guide on cycling there.

Sure the more experienced members will add more tips and advice Wink

As above, ammonia is muh more reliable.

Should be raised to 2ppm, and just start testing from day one really, checking to see if levels go up or down.

Thanks everyone, I’ve not seen any Ammonia for sale locally, and we no longer have a Homebase here.
There was an Ammonia ‘product’ at my LFS, but the guy told me I didn’t need it 🤔

Sadly a lot of LFS give out awful advice regarding cycling. Preferring to sell you expensive and useless potions that do nothing and when the fish get ill you’ll go back and either buy medicine for the fish or new fish

Have a look online for some ammonia. Jeyes Kleenoff is a popular one for cycling.

My advice would always be to double check any ‘advice’ given out by any LFS before acting on it. I’ve heard some awful things being said to customers over the years.

Thanks Cheltgirl, I do try and research, and ask people where I can, but as you say LFS do give conflicting advice.

I bought 500ml Kleen Off Ammonia from Amazon. It's the bizarre price of £3.91 with free delivery.

It's important to buy ammonia solution that has no surfactants so the stuff above works great. 10% solution.

Well I’ve set everything up, including rocks, plants and some wood, more to be added once it’s waterlogged. I’ve added water conditioner to the water also Bio-boost.
All switched on...and I think I’ve now got what’s called bacteria bloom...but I’m told that’s fairly normal?

Can I ask why you feel you have a bacteria bloom?

I have cycled two tanks and am cycling another one right now, I never got a bacteria bloom Blush
