Live food that stays alive…

Post by Wishafish »

This isn’t as creepy a question as it sounds, honestly!! Which live foods would survive in the tank if they were not eaten immediately? My most local LFS sell live food in quite big bags (compared to the size of my fish) so it is too much for my fish in one go. I was wondering about getting a bag and whether it would last.

If its emptied into a sealable container, and kept in the fridge then it should stay alive for a few days :)

Hi
If you get daphnia, and put it into a container in the garden, it should reward you with a steady supply.

Daphnia breeds pretty quickly in green water.

You could also get brine shrimp eggs to hatch in jars of salty water. Make sure they are rinsed well before putting in your tank.

Then there is always frozen food. It may not swim, but has similar food value as live food

@keithmart Thanks for the suggestion - I wonder if daphnia would live in the water butt in my garden?!

I already use a lot of frozen food, I thought my fish might like a change!

From a shop, daphnia and bloodworm will both survive. With bloodworm you’ll need to match the temperatures first. They’re usually stunned on contact with tropical water.
