I blanch peas, courgette, pepper and cucumber for Jeff our plec.

5 mins or so in a bowl of boiling water is normally enough. Or I microwave for a minute. If it's too soft it'll fall apart after a while in the tank...

From what I've read they have a long intestinal tract and blanching veg helps to break down the cellulose so that it's easier to digest. I either use a plant weight or a small fork to weigh the veg down.

I think he'd eat it either way though - look what he did to this cucumber and courgette! ::wtf:: :D

I've got a swede in the fridge, only fresh veg left: will the fish or shrimp eat it? :)

Yes you can Tycho, but they do tend to go to mush quicker when thawed out.

I freeze a batch at the beginning of the month when we do a big shop and save them for when the fresh ones run out.

But plankton is right, they don’t need much blanching.

I was curious about your question and from a few other forums it seems the answer is yes and its Plecs (not sure for Shrimps) that will go for it but use it in raw don't blanch. I'd cut a strip off and see what happens. Have you tried banana with your Shrimps?

I really do have a swede in the fridge...
I think I'll try a thin strip, see what eats it and report back. I'll also try some banana in the shrimp tank, if I ever get to buy some!
