Would you say it's as safe as frozen long as you rinse and get rid of the water? Or is it likely that pathogens may still get through in the worms themselves? I would love to feed live and my LFS usually have bags, but am just wary after my childhood tank experience... Though I don't think we rinsed them then...plankton wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 7:59 am If you store the fresh from shops in the fridge make sure it isn't too cold. I think the longest you can store them is about a week, but I only buy enough for one feed when I see it, which isn't very often around here.
Unless you do what @Vale! does.
Oh, and don't forget to rinse it in a net before putting in the tank to get rid of the water in the pouch/bag......

Most live food is apparently irradiated nowadays to remove pathogens so it should be as safe as frozen (which is also irradiated before freezing).
In the old days it just came from wherever they found it, I lost tankfuls of fish in the 60s and 70s because of that.
If you're raising it yourself you can ensure the purity of the culture.

Live food - pour in to fine mesh net and rinse under cold water
Frozen food - no need to rinse
All the best

Thanks! Bags of brine shrimp and daphnia in my kitchen right now. Do I rinse in tap or tank water (won't the chlorine kill them if tap?) Or does it not matter as I'm feeding them to my fish seconds later?

If in doubt, tankwater is always safer.

I'm thinking I might buy some crickets for my Oscars to eat. Reading up, they're supposed to be good for them

@PaulVerrall Crickets will only be beneficial if you set up a small tank for them and gut load them, either with fresh veg and fruit or you can buy gut loader ready made.PaulVerrall wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 13:05 pm I'm thinking I might buy some crickets for my Oscars to eat. They are sold with bran in the bottom which people assume they eat but they don't, its to keep the boxes dry because crickets smell otherwise.
Other things you could try are Morio worms and waxworms, but the same gut loading applies to the Morios and waxworms should be fed as a treat as they have high fat content.
Was going to start a thread on another matter with regard to 'live' feeding but may as well add it here.
Does/Has anyone with carnivorous fish such as Oscars, snakeheads etc ever used frozen deadbait as food?
Saw 4kg blocks of frozen roach for sale on a fishing site and wondered if they would be suitable.
I would assume that the freezing process would kill off any nasties that they may have and its one step closer to natural diet.
