Re: Easy carpeting plants

Thanks so much for all the replies. I'll see what happens. I've mentioned Co2 systems to my beloved wife/accountant and the purchase was declined, so I was wondering about home made reactors. Is there any benefit to adding Co2 every so often ? Or does it have to be a setup thats in place all the time ?

Thanks

consistant co2 levels are needed. If you want to cheat a carpet, use polysperma and keep it trimmed ;)

You can make a home made reactor. 2l coke bottle, sugar, water and yeast with some sort of airline to get the CO2 into your tank. But the problem with this setup is that you can't control the output of CO2 and it changes as the yeast creates alcohol. Probably end up causing BBA although your plants will get a benefit.

Yes, one of the main causes is fluctuating levels of CO2. You can take measures to help that such as multiple reactors replaced at regular intervals. But it does get tiresome.

Bba is a horrible algae. It's very difficult to remove.

If the accountant is fussy and you're not in too much of a rush, just do what I did with my co2, buy one bit of kit each month, biggest outlay was the regulator at about ยฃ25/30, I was lucky and blagged a fire extinguisher but they aren't too much either, it's bloody mind numbing but it gets you there in the end.
