In a fully planted settled tank , as the munchers have been in residence for a long time, and the water is in balance, is it necessary to add bio-media to the filters along to the ususal sponges?

IMHO if the current setup is doing its job why change it :)

It's long been said that 50% bio media should be change every six months ...but I never have. :]
