Most heaters will only raise the temp 3*C over the room temp. get a schego heater thats rated more than your tank ( seeing as you're using a controller, you're all good! ) and that'll raise it a bit quicker.

Have you really only added one dose of Dr. Tims?
It doesn't seem to work as quickly as "just ammonia" if so......
With the nitrite at 6 now, I would have expected zero ammonia.......????

still creeping but at least in the right direction :)

Noticed the GH is creeping up, I'll presume that's as the sand/lava rock release any trace elements. KH has remained stable since adding the Potassium bicarbonate.

NB have upped the PH figure slightly as the NT Labs only counts in whole numbers but the colour is between a 7 & an 8
.

Same thing for the Nitrite & Nitrate, the NT Labs doesn't (necessarily) give that granularity so it's a guesstimate of where I am between colours

Lava rock should be inert.
Test the sand over 3 weeks or so with some in a cup of water, that'll tell you whether it's inert or not. ;)

the sand is probably not inert :)

That said I have such a low starting point anyways that a degree or 2 harder actually makes no difference

First milestone reached, first ammonia count of 0.

Think I need to go buy some scent/additive free household ammonia though as the 60ml bottle of Dr Tims will only give me 2 more doses and its not exactly cheap ;o)

You need 4 drops Dr Tims per USG (or in other words 1 drop per litre) to achieve 2ppm ammonia which turns out to be 3ml per 50 drops so 250l water comes out at 15ml.

Any specific brand recommendations for the ammonia please?
