I'm sure they exist in Norn Iron (did I get that right?) but you will need a lot of patience! About once a year I spot a flash of blue, but I think I've only seen one perching twice in my life. Happily today I had my camera with me! Do some googling and see if they have been spotted near you. You'll need a fairly clean river or canal, maybe a lough. But don't expect to see one on your first visit!

I had to rescue a kingfisher once from one of my cats when I lived near a river (end of garden) in Somerset.
It was still alive and I sat it on a branch of a tree and it sort of looked at me gratefully which was weird but nice.
I got flooded the following Christmas so wouldn't live near a river again......fortunately I was renting at the time.

Today I have filled 3 more hessian coffee sacks with subsoil, and placed them in the pond along the straight edge. Their upper parts are just below the surface. I have transplanted a sedge or rush into each one. The idea is that these will eventually form decent-size clumps, and that the roots will stabilise the soil before the sacks rot away.
Also, the tadpoles are doing well. I still have most of them and the bigger ones are starting to grow legs.
