I have wanted a pond for some time, did look into it last year but my garden is nearly impossible to dig, under a very small amount of top soil is a limestone shelf, all of my flower borders are raised just to give me enough depth for flowers,

So recently not helped by tempting pictures from @Ruth I got myself an insta - pond, basically a plastic tub, it is supposed to cope with standing above ground, it's quite large 6ft long and is supposed to hold 950 litres but more like 800 with plants and the fact it's not full to the top, will put a better description under my tank logs sometime, but of course now it's set up would like a few temperate fish in there, it will be drained for the winter maybe October time, have been thinking what fish to get at the moment top of the list are:
Buenos Aires Tetra
Bloodfin Tetra
WCMM - gold variety
One sided livebearer (never seen any in a shop only seen them in pictures)
also considering Gold and Ruby barbs think they are lovely, but in the winter when I bring the fish in don't think they will fit easily into my existing tanks which is putting me off,

*does anyone have any experience with fish listed above? Or anything else I need to consider for tub fish in general?*

At the moment fish ruled out because they need soft water or I'm just not keen on them are:
Livebearers in general (except the one above)
Killifish
Cherry Barb
Danio's
Rainbow Shiner
Odessa Barb

right better put a picture on here you go :D

Go for colder water fish as the night temps are still only 9-10*C

The two tetras you've mentioned can be nippers, but it's a large area so they may be ok.
Any of the goodieds (as well as the one-sided) would be ok, as would the limias, bith are livebearers but don't produce offspring like the "common" livebearers.
They can be fussy though as they're not commonly kept in aquaria.
You will need good protection for them as they would easily be picked off by birds or cats. ;)
I'm assuming you'll have a filter, it may also be worth considering heating it to make sure it doesn't go below 10C at night.

May not be able to find those livebearers anyway as like you say they are not commonly stocked, I was thinking of putting a heater in maybe later in the year, more concerning at the moment is how warm it is in the day think I might get a solar powered airline will look into it next week, I don't stock anything in my tanks with long fins so hopefully nipping wont be too much of an issue :-/

Thanks Martin I have watched a good number of her tub video's now which has given me a lot of encouragement, now also considering orange finned danio (kyathit) if anyone has any experience? Buenos Aires don't seem to have a good reputation so not sure whether to try them or not, they are down as taking cooler temps than the bloodfins so had them near the top of the list but now not sure :-/

Hi Staffylover,
I had a lovely wildlife pond in my last garden and one year l put half a dozen Golden Minnows in, they are a variety of our native Minnow, the ones we used to bring home in a Jam jar. By the end of the year l had quite a shoal of them. They look fantastic in a group and of course, as they are Golden they can be easily seen. They lasted quite a few years in my pond, numbers dropped by the spring but soon built up again by summer. I dont think they are as hardy as the wild Minnows but if you are concerned that we might have a bad winter you could bring them indoors and keep them in a tank over winter.
Best wishes as always,
The Lazy Saint.
