Hi all,
Anyone use this stuff?
Its listed here.. https://fishlab.com/nitrate/ ...as a great way to reduce nitrates
Wondered if anyone has tried it, i've got a planted tank but still struggle to get my nitrates really low, wonder if some of these thrown in the external filter will help?

Siporax is a great medium but the nitrate claim is misleading. You’d need a filter the size of your tank for just the Siporax to get a noticeable nitrate reduction. You’d also need a very slow flow through it, so in a standard filter it won’t really reduce nitrates.
Btw, I wouldn’t trust a site that confuses nitrates and nitrites (the Seachem Prime part), or calls a medium ‘a media’.

I've used in the past in my canister filters and is a very good medium but I agree with @Blackghost that it is misleading what it says about it. Siporax is also very expensive you'll find if you want any great quantity.black ghost wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 21:46 pm Siporax is a great medium but the nitrate claim is misleading. Sera Siporax is a good biological media and better than the cheaper ceramic rings that are usually supplied.
I also agree with Blackghost that the information is very misleading.
Sera Siporax 1000ml (1L) is only £10.97 from Amazon (Link)

I used Sera Siporax bio active professional, which is which is in pellet form and somewhat more expensive than the Media rings you have linked.

Dammit - i've brought some now!
I'll drop it in the middle tray of my canister with the other stuff thats in there, cant hurt i suppose.
Should i put it in a bag or just loose in the tray?
Out of interest - is there anything other than plants that can reduce nitrates? my tap water nitrates are already high

Siporax is a porous medium so it needs to be kept scrupulously clean, otherwise the microscopic pores will quickly get blocked, making it no better than ceramic rings. You’ll need to put it right at the top of the filter, as the last item.

Bag or loose, makes no difference. Yeah at the top is best, to keep it clean(er), assuming the flow is bottom to top...
I have mine loose so that it covers the whole tray...
