The genus Hemichromis contains two distinct groups, the small red or green “Jewel Cichlids” and the much larger “Five Spot Cichlids”.
The first phase of an all-inclusive revision of Hemichromis is complete and the Jewel Cichlids have now been placed in a new genus, Rubricatochromis.
There is also a new species of Jewel Cichlid, R. angolensis, from the southern end of their range.
