First post so be easy on me
I used to have a marine tank around 5 years ago and I’m looking at setting it back up but fresh water this time, as marine was too time consuming.
So I’ve ditched the protein skimmer and stuff and bought a fluval 207 filter.
Anyway my question is, I’ve got a massive piece of live rock (now dead rock as it been out of water for 5 years now) which used to be the centre piece in the tank. The fish used to love swimming in and out of it. Can I put this rock into the fresh water tank? Will it Leach salt into the water ruining the water quality. I known it won’t work as a biological filter. I just want it as an ornament.
Thanks

Greetings :] & welcome AF-UK

My first thought is, no not really. Freshwater fish are not built like their saltwater cousins and would get injured rather easily.

The only I think you could do is to soak the rock in freshwater, changing it weekly until all trace of ammonia has gone.

Still don't recommend it.

Nope, not worth using as it will raise the hardness of your water due to the calcium content of the rock.

Sell it as dry reef rock as it can fetch a gold price these days.
