The water needs to be hardened first, so it can't go straight from the tap into the tank ;)

You're both right.

I'm going to try using my pump/hose to pump water from sink to container where I harden water. 

Water needs to stay in container for several hours.

To dispose tank water, I'm going to either try siphon & extra tube & siphon direct to outside, or I can get an extra storage container (the same so they all stack when I'm not using them), siphon into there & then pump outside.

Already using pump to return water to tank.

Would be great if I don't have to get too much extra stuff, as it all needs storing away somewhere when I'm not using it.
