Are you dosing with a filter medium, like Easylife's Filter Fluid Medium, Seachem's Stability to name a few or drop into the sump a media bag of Ammonia Remover like Seachem Purigen?

From my brief experience the API ammonia test always showed a slight green tint where the NT kit read a perfect zero

Yeah I usually do a "control" test of tap water when it's only slightly green so I can compare.
So left it for 2 days with no water changes, in my (simple) mind made sense to leave a bit of ammonia in there to let the bacteria build up if I keep taking it out they won't grow as much I guess? Obviously didn't let it get above 0.25-0.5 on the test.
And this morning's test...
Back to yellow ammonia is gone

Now that the water parameters are back on track, my next things to do (before adding more fish) ;
1. Try and make it a bit quieter... This thing sounds like having a jacuzzi in your living room.
2. Get plants
3. Get some filter floss as small bits floating around/might be bubbles because of how turbulent the water is hitting the sump.
