Had new tank for about a week now which is 400+ and I’ve tested the water today and the nitrates are very high, I have done. 50% water change and tested again to which the results were hardly any different.
What can I do to help this.

question:
Are you currently doing a fishless cycle using ammonia or have you got fish in there already?
How high is high?

If you have fish in there, get some seachem prime in as soon as you can

If the nitrates are "very" high then at least the "munchers" are doing their job of absorbing the Nitrite. Take care and don't kill those. As Paul suggest, add SeaChem Prime and I'd also suggest adding SeaChem Stability also.
@mikeyw64 asks if the cycle is fishless or not? I ran the fishless cycle and the nitrates didn't appear until the 6th. week., so maybe you have fish in the tank already. If so, can you tell us about those , species, number etc. I know its a little early for any plants you have in the tank to have an effect on nirtrates, but my tank is planted and they keep that well in check, so maybe you can think about those for future additions.

What was causing your nitrates? Because I just can’t figure out what’s going on, I’ve tested my tap water and that’s at 0 for nitrates.mikeyw64 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 18:07 pmon the other hand I was getting nitrates within days on both Sunnyside & Laurens Tank (which is currently being cycled).

What was causing my nitrates?
A natural result of the cycling process.
Ammonia to nitrite to nitrate

As @mikeyw64 says. Nitrates are just the result of the natural cycle. And its a good sign that the cycle is working well.
