Since you are not going down the live plant root where you add liquid Co2 and ferts i would personally leave the carbon in there. If you decide to remove it then Purigen is a good option.Wiggles wrote: Ordered some amonia solution and the API master test kit last night so ready to start the cycle properly once they get here.
Water is now nice and clear (was a bit cloudy for the first few days with the new filter)
I'm looking at changing the top layer of the filter as the fluval came with carbon which I believe is good for removing impurities but is fairly short lived? So I guess it will have helped absorbing anything from the sand and plastic plants so I can replace it with something better at holding bacteria growth now.
Wiggles tank
By the way one of the best videos on Youtube about cycling your tank is from Aquagirl with the added bonus of her being really fit.

Read some stuff about the Dr tims that said the instructions are wrong and to add 1 drop per gallon not 4 (as per the bottle) did that left it 30 mins to circulate the tank and this is what I came up with :
Amonia looks a bit low so might need to add more? But nitrates look higher than I expected?

I'll keep an eye on how things go but I did start the tank off with the previous owners filter (which was dry by the time I bought everything) which I assumed had no useful bacteria left in it but maybe not?
