From what I understand there is not really much difference between the 2. Except a powerhead flow direction seems to be more flexible to adjust? Am I right?

How important is the addition of a powerhead? Are they needed for anything other than "spinning" the water around faster?

And if one it popped in does it really matter if its a "powerhead" or a "pump"?

Toying with the idea of one in my tank, just not certain if useful/needed.

a powerhead is another name for return pump. Do you mean a wave maker? If so then they create a wide flow pattern that isn't as harsh as slapping a pump in the tank.

More and more I see the importance of a decent flow in a tank. Most have a 3000 l/ph or 2000 l/ph powerhead / wavrmaker nowadays.

I've never had strong flow in my tanks, and still don't. 1000lph is all thats going through mine at the moment.

I don't even have air pumps in my tanks....just the filter.
Water maintenance is more important than anything else.
Extra flow is for fish that need it, like hillstream loaches for instance........
If a fish comes from a slower-flowing environment then it's not necessary to do more.
If at first you don't succeed....
...get someone else to do it! :D

Enjoy your fish, shrimps and snails!

It is not a must, but most of my fish really love it ! And it will prevent any dead spots !
