Cheap Wish LED lights

Post by Gnox »

I've just gotten 3 very cheap Chinese LED clip on lights for my 120l tank. They are ultra bright, but all white LED.
I'm toying with using something like nail varnish to paint a few individual bulbs red and blue to soften the light and help plant growth.
Has anyone tried anything like this before - or am I wasting my time even trying?

You could put some coloured plastic in front of the lights. I’ve used sweet wrappers (you can have blackwater with the brown ones :) ).

Actually, it is quite easy to snip out an led and solder in a new one. No high voltages involved. ..Just need a steady hand and a fine pointed soldering iron.

Depends on the type of lighting. On these it wouldn't be that simple! They are smaller chips, which require a reflow oven to do properly. You risk burning other LEDs or damaging the board trying to do it with an iron

Best excuse to buy a box of Quality Street!

Went with blue and red nail varnish over the outer plastic cover. Working brilliantly - harsh white tone is gone and reduction in green spot algea

I second the Quality Street option!
Been using the red wrappers to cover my rifle night-light LEDs for years, but you will have to force down all the sweets...:)
