Dear Friends,

Its a year old now, going to re-do the tank, do I need to replace the ADA soil or can i just mix with some new and add some root tabs?

Thanks

If it was me, I would probably mix it with some new soil and crumble in some API Root Tabs.

Yes, when I'm setting up the substrate initially, I put a thin layer of substrate down, then crush a few tabs, depending on the area I need to cover and then sprinkle them over the areas that I plan to place the plants. Then I cover it all with more substrate to keep it in place.

handy advice thanks. Was thinking powersand > substrait (mix of ADA v2 and CaribSea Eco-Complete) with crushed root tabs > gravel to top.

never tried a gravel top layer before, might actually go with very light coloured sand, any thoughts?

I always top my aqua soil with sand, so yes I'd agree with that. The colour choice is personal preference, I tend to avoid very light coloured sand, but that's just my choice, it'll all do the same job of keeping the aqua soil from getting into the water column.

I've picked up quite a lot of tips from these videos and the things he suggests have worked for me.

I've watched loads of his videos now, he has some really good ideas, I've learnt a lot from them. It was his videos that convinced me I didn't need to go back to using CO2 to have a nice planted tank.
