Hi everyone.

I'm looking for a tetra to go and live with my Apistogramma Baenschi, tank is 50l, with soft water. Something a little different from a neon tetra would be good!

Thanks,
Ben

I like the look of these and they appear to fit the bill, unless they are super active?

Embers are the only tetra I’d consider for a 50L.
240L Fluval Roma with Oase 600 Biomaster: 1 German red bristlenose, 4 male cherry barbs, 6 standard rummynose, 3 golden rummynose tetra, 9 emperor tetra, 14 cardinal tetra, 2 hengeli rasbora, 3 nerite snails, 1 adult Sulawesi snail and multiple juveniles continually appearing.

Parameters: gH2, kH1, pH7.4 (tap).

How much swimming do hatchet fish do? And how big do they get? They look like lazy sods in the shops, although not the best environment to be active.

The (common in the shop) Hatchetfish grow to anywhere from 1.5 inch to 2.5 inch, depending on species.
They actually require a tank of around 4 foot (120cm).

The smaller Tetra include Tucano Tetra (Tucanoichthys tucano), Reed Tetra (Hyphessobrycon elachys), Green Dwarf Tetra (Odontocharacidium aphanes), Hummingbird Tetra (Trochilocharax ornatus), Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae).

Thanks VM and Stephen. I'll have a look around next time I'm at the shop. I've never really bought tetras. In 10 years of fishkeeping I've only kept lemons and rosys, plus a few randoms I rescued from a local moron.

They will probably look quite cool amongst the plants, particularly once they grow out again. I trimmed them at the weekend and replanted them in a little tank I have to use elsewhere. Fancying the ember tetras at the moment though.

I've got gold tetra (well I think I only have two of the original 8 left) but they are cool in a smaller tank.
I have them with pygmeus corys.
If at first you don't succeed....
...get someone else to do it! :D

Enjoy your fish, shrimps and snails!

They are a pretty little fish. Males get a nice blue tint to their fins.
