Thanks for all the great advice I received above, I purchased some new Fluval ribbed pipes and fitted them yesterday, not the easiest of jobs on the Fluval Roma 240, when your 6ft.3 with sausage fingers like mine, got there in the end thankfully without incident.
I cleaned out the old ribbed pipes and it's fair to say there was some brown muck in them, I'll keep the old pipes as spares, might come in handy in future.
I also bought the new Oase CrystalSkim 350 skimmer, got that set up now and hopefully together with doing some extra water changes - it will finally stop snowing in my tank

Hi Martin, there's definitely been some improvement, going to carry on with gravel cleaning and water changes for a little bit longer, hopefully to mop up the remaining bits.
