Fantastic that you found the cause. Having found it in solation from the tanks biofiltration we can rule out ammonia spike being missed and converted to nitrite.

What brand are you using? Would be interesting to work out which component is causing the postive result.

Hi SPACKlick
I am using a cheap brand off ebay.
I contacted the seller who said the main ingredient was osmocote. Its the type of tab with the clear shell with loads of different colour beads In.
I briefly tested them before but only left the tabs in water overnight. Clearly I needed to let them dissolve first.

Needless to say I will stop using them and take in some of the recommendations suggested by folk on here.

I wonder what else it's got in it because osmocote shouldn't contain Nitrite directly nor should it mess with a nitrite test as far as I'm aware.

A few days ago I dropped one of the cheap ebay root tabs into a vase where I'm just growing plants so there's no filtration. I tested that for nitrite and it immediately went off the scale, I just have no idea if it's really nitrite or a false positive.

Fertilisers will say x% nitrogen but they don't say what state it is in, it could be ammonia or nitrite.

Pretty conclusive then.
Surely it must be a false positive in my case as its been over a month now. The inhabitants would certainly all be dead by now.
